What is the best tasting canned cat food for picky cats?

by admin on October 26, 2009

I’m looking for a good quality canned cat food for my cats. I have tried Natural Choice and Natural Balance and my cats don’t seem to care for either. Any ideas? I’m looking for something with quality ingredients and no by-products so please don’t tell me Friskies or 9 Lives.

All you can do is try different brands until you find a brand your cat likes.

My cats like Friskies

Try merrick or wellness canned
Best of luck
Wellness has some 12 1/2 oz cans which will save money when dealing with multiple cats

My cat can be sort of picky. She seems more picky about texture than taste, but will turn her nose up to some tastes too. She has taken nicely to Science Diet. She also likes two out of the three Newman’s Own foods I’ve brought home. She likes some flavors of Evolve, Nutro, and Triumph as well. I’m going to try Nature’s Variety on her sometime soon to see if she likes that so I can add to her diet as well, but as of now can’t comment on their food.

Cats have different tastes, just like we do. You will probably find that you have to go to a couple of pet stores to try different top-of-the-line canned foods. I don’t know why you are ruling out the dry varieties, as they make them without grains also, if that is your concern. Some cats never get into the wet foods, no matter what you give them. You will have to experiment. You can also find great brands online and they can tell you where you can buy them nearest to you. The descriptions will give you the ingredients, so at least you will know what is in them before you buy them. Some cats prefer fish, some prefer chicken or beef. I never found an expensive food that my cats (and I have a lot of them) liked very much, so good luck. Oh, by the way, my cat’s favorite food is straight tuna and egg (or cheese) 9 Lives that has NO BY PRODUCTS in it. I mix this with a high-quality dry, and they love it.

My kittens likes Felidae, but that’s not canned. Experiment til you find one. Just cuz one cat may like something doesn’t mean another will.

This is really weird that your cat doesn’t like Natural Balance! My cat LOVES them and eat this brand faster than other brands like Felidae and Chicken Soup for Cat Lover’s Soul. It smells so good and looks appetizing. Well, you can try Felidae, Wellness or Chicken Soup. Cats are likely to be attracted to chicken and turkey flavors. I’m trying to help and I know I’m not the best help because I haven’t tired many varieties of canned cat foods.

Cats react to both flavor and texture, so try some different flavors and texures. Merrick makes a nice variety of foods that are sort of chunky. Wellness makes a pouch (grain free) that is slices in broth. Weruva (hard to find) makes a shredded chicken. Blue Buffalo has a slightly chunky "healthy selects" that is pretty new, and well-liked here. For fish, try Tiki Cat. These are all by-product free and high quality. A surprising favorite here was the Merrick BG quail. Actually they like the BG chicken too.

Science Diet is very healthy and my cats love it. Try tuna or any other seafood flavor. Mine go nuts for tuna. Plus with less by-products in the food you get less stink in the litter box!

My cats (brother and sister) are now 8 years old. When they were kittens, I tried every wet cat food going and they were so picky they wouldn’t eat any of them.

They like Science Diet dry food and the Vet said it’s okay as long as they have plenty of water since they are only eating dry food. They have been eating the dry food for years and are healthy.

I have two large water bowls – one by the food dish and one upstairs in the bathroom as they like lying on my bed and I don’t want them to be too lazy to go downstairs and drink and maybe cause health problems.

If your cats won’t eat canned food, but will eat a high quality dry food, you may just have to accept it like I did and give them dry food. Just make sure they have plenty of fresh water every day.

Hope this is helpful.

My cat likes Fancy Feast. They have a variety of flavors, like Tuna, Seafood Sensation, Turkey and Giblet, and Chicken Medley. And at 40 cents a can, it can’t be beat! They also have lots of vegetarian flavors as well. I use them as a treat though, my cat eats dry food as a staple.

My cats love Purina Pro Plan. Actually I have a funny story about this cat food. When I got my first two kittens, after living with just me and an older cat for several years, my two kittens could not be bribed, tempted or anything else to like wet food. I finally gave up, and fed them the healthiest dry food I could find.

Then I got a kitten who liked wet food, so I would put it out for her, but when she saw that the other two cats didn’t like wet food, she stopped eating it.

Then I adopted another cat who was brought up on Pro Plan, (she has extra care at a private shelter) so I started buying it again. Not only did she keep eating the wet food, but Misty, the kitten who wouldn’t eat started eating wet food again, and a month later I noticed that the two oldest cats were joining the crowd at the wet food dish!

Go figure…

I would stay away from Nine Lives — I tried getting my cats to eat it, and they only thing they would do is try to bury it… like you-know-what!
