Are there any common symptoms to know if your cat is infected? Is there a cure?

Thank you!

There are some symptoms that may occur depending on the severity of the disease. Lethargy, anemia, diarrhea or constipation, lack of appetite. Unfortunately there is no cure nor an exact way to determine how long the cat will live for. On the streets, it may not last a year if around other cats since the disease brings their immune systems effectiveness down. However, an indoor cat can live a fairly long, normal & happy life alone or with other FLV+ cats. Leukemia is quite easy to catch from feline to feline, so it’s always best to keep separated or have no other cats at all. Take your cat to the vet soon, you’ll do it some good.

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a fatal infectious retrovirus that affects the immune system, and can cause some cancers and associated diseases. Although it is similar to the virus that causes feline immunodeficiency disease (FIV) and the virus responsible for human AIDS (HIV), studies so far indicate that it cannot be passed on to other animals or to humans. FeLV causes lymphosarcoma, also known as feline leukemia, a cancer of the lymph nodes.

If you believe that your cat may have come into contact with this disease, it is best that you contact your vet and have the test done to determine if indeed your kitty has Feline Leukemia. There is no cure for Feline Leukemia. We have always adopted cats with Feline Leukemia and we currently have 2. One is a kitten who got it through his mother and the other we believe was infected as an adult by another cat while she was living outside. It is not the Feline Leukemia itself that ends their life, rather, it is the secondary infections and the cancer that they are at a higher risk of getting that ends their life due to their immune system being so bad. We have had a total of 8 cats/kittens that we adopted all with Feline Leukemia. Sophia, Linus, and Spaz all succumbed to cancer and Figaro, Spike and Stoney succumbed to severe upper respiratory viruses that the antibiotics could not get rid of. Our current 2, Socrates and Carmen are in great health(aside from the leukemia) and we make sure that they are kept indoors at all times, given vitamins and eat great food and get their health checked every year by our vet.

My kitten was diagnosed with feline leukemia. He seemed totally healthy til he went to a vet for his checkup. They diagnosed him with feline leukemia and he had to be put down less than 3 weeks later due to lymphoma. There’s very often no symptoms until it’s too late and they’ve caught other symptoms. I believe that he never really ate as much as a normal kitten does and he was overly thirsty, but that’s it. There is no cure for feline leukemia but with a good diet, regular visits to the vet, and vitamins they can live a long life. Mine unfortunately didn’t. Some people believe immunosuppresants help, but my vet said they aren’t proven and are very expensive. Besides they wouldn’t have helped my poor kitty after he got lymphoma.

There is NO cure for Feline Leukemia (FELV), or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Both these diseases are covered in the FELV/FIV vaccine series that kittens get, then get boostered once every year. Unfortunately, kittens can contract it from mom in utero, or from her milk while they are nursing.
