My stepfather brought home a stray who is rather sick and I am worried that she will give something to my cat.

the vaccine for feline leukemia is generally given every 2-3 years. However, if your cat is at a particularily high risk of the virus, your vet may elect to booster it every year. I will warn you though, that while many vaccines are nearly 100% effective, the one for feline leukemia is not. I don’t have the statistics in front of me, but I believe it’s only about 70-80% effective, so you still have to try to keep your kitty’s risk to a minimum. The vaccine for FIV (feline AIDS) is quite new. Many clinics don’t use it yet. As a result, I’m not familiar with it, and am not sure how long it lasts.
For the cat’s life and there is never a reason to get boosters

I think 3 years. May want to check with a vet for sure, but my cats go in once every 3 years for vaccinations.
generally several years. many vets no longer give boosters every year since it seems to be lasting longer than previously thought.
best way to tell if your cat is still protected is to ask your vet to do a titer test on your kitty. this will tell if the antibodies are still in your kitty’s system protecting her.
and get the stray kitty to the vet for an exam and her own vaccines. in the meantime, keep them separate and make sure you wash up well in between handling the cats.
