How do you train cats and dogs for a baby?

by admin on September 22, 2009

We are having a baby, and we have one dog and two cats. We don’t want to get rid of them, but one of my cats is a little rambunctious, and our dog often bites at people’s feet. Is there a way other than obedience school?
Chihuahua momma, you seriously need to take a chill pill. You are a little nuts. If you don’t like my questions, stay away from them.

Thanks for visiting. Your comments are always welcome!

Would you really choose some pets over your child’s safety? You would have to be on vigilant 24 hour watch All the time as if looking after a baby is not enough work

Getting rid of them is never necessary, unless the dog is very vicious. Pets typically feel protective of their owners’ children. There are ways to train your pets at home – I would suggest also trying to expose the dog to small children ahead of time.

Why are you lying Ann? In another question that you just asked and deleted, because you did not like the answers you got, you said that you hate this dog, you wished that your dog was dead, because it bites feet, you are having a baby and you don’t want problems. Again, if this dog had been trained properly in the first place, then you would not be saying this and you would not have a biting problem. You need to get your facts straight and quit changing your story! If you are not willing to take the time to properly train this dog, then there is no other way other than obedience school. Your husband has had this dog for many years and loves his dog and you need to respect that and deal with it.
Here is some information on preparing for the arrival of a new baby and having a dog! You better get busy, start reading and start training. It’s not that hard to do, but you have to be patient, persistent and willing to take the time to properly train your dog!

you need to set up boundaries, like the dog and cats aren’t allowed inside the babies room at all, they can patiently wait outside the room. You could do this this the dog by using your significant other to block the doorway allowing no one entrance to the baby’s room until they learn that its off limits also you will want to start training the animals that there are boundaries when you are holding the baby, that they should be out of arms length. You would do this by using your hand to put distance between you and the animal, you could also use for foot to keep them back. It might sound stupid but you might want to get a babydoll and practice some of these things before the baby comes. Try finding a babydoll that cries that way you can see how the animals will react to a crying baby. It is ok for them to be curious and want to know what the noise is but you should NEVER let them actually come right up to the baby, they should still keep their distance. Hope this helped!

I have not tried this, but friend of mine who had many pets brought their baby home from the hospital and put him on the floor so that the pets could smell him and get acquainted with him. Obviously they watched carefully. They had no problems.

Animals seem to sense that this is a baby, and they will not hurt it; on the contrary, they will take great interest in the baby as it grows up. There comes a time when the animals need to be protected from the child because they will not scratch or bite unless their lives are being threatened. Most animals that have a baby or child in the house become quite protective.

Good luck, I hope delivery is easy and all goes well!

How old is your dog? Dogs less than or 6 months old usually nip at peoples feet but dogs older than say 9 months seldom nip or bite. No problems with that. Keep the baby away from the dog when no adults are around- as in his enthusiasm the dog may give the baby a few friendly nips which may turn out wrong- but otherwise- dogs are very intelligent and they will figure out the baby is one of the family and will acclimatize.

Dunno about cats- hate and mistrust the species.
