Although it's very natural for the cats to want to go there (as it's very similar to their litter box), you may be able to keep it out of that area if you put moth balls or orange/lemon peels in the area. We stopped our cats from pooping on our gravel driveway by putting mulched up eucalyptus trees and leaves in an area where it is OK for them to poop. I think it was the fact that the mulch was loose and easy for them dig in and cover that attracted by cats. Try some kind of mulch, hope it helps. Good Luck. I take it their not your cats doing this.
