feline leukemia?

by admin on August 28, 2009

I had a cat that was diagnosed with feline leukemia and died shortly after about a month and a half ago. just today we adopted a new kitten. 7 weeks old. i was wondering what the odds are of her catching the disease. we threw out everything from the sick kitty and we bought all new stuff. we shampooed the carpet downstairs and we wiped everything down with clorox wipes. so what are the odds of her catching it.

I work at a vet clinic and the virus doesn’t last very long in the environment (usually less than 48 hours).

I would suggest though that if the kitten hasn’t been tested, you get her tested now and again at 3-6 months (it can take 3 months for the virus to show up on the tests after exposure).

Also, I would also suggest that atleast for the first few years you vaccinated for FLV – and for a very long time if it’s an indoor/outdoor cat.

Anyway – I am very sorry for your loss – that had to be very hard. Congrats though on your new kitten!

You should be ok. I would say your odds are pretty slim considering you did everything right and got new stuff. Sorry for your loss and congrats on your new arrival. :)

If you have had the cat vaccinated for the disease there is almost no chance she will catch it. If not you may have to go through the pain of losing another cat.

Take her to the vet.

take her to the vet & get her checked. It’s about $30. Plus, get her the feline leukemia vaccines. They’re about $10 each w/ there being a series of 3 plus yearly boosters.

First of all sorry for your loss. But I think your odds are pretty slim. Just watch the new kitten for any signs. If you wiped everything down and threw out the old stuff you should be fine. I would suggest wiping everything down a second time just in case. Considering it was quite some time ago the disease most likely wouldn’t stick around for so long. Jus be careful and hope for the best. But I really think the odds are fairly slim.

i’m not really sure i bet your vet told you to wait 3 years after the passing of your FelV cat to get a new cat huh?(my vet told me that but we got new cats anyways :P ) i would say just clean really really good/sterilize everything your cat touched and it should be fine. thats what i did and my cats are fine they show no signs of FelV. but get your new kitten tested for it just in case. but i’m concerned a little bit cuz your cat only passed away a month and a half ago you should have waited for like 2 months to get a new cat. i only waited 6 months after mine died then i got a new one.well anyways have fun w/ your new kitty. i’ll pray that it won’t get FelV :)
