Caring properly for cats with cancer can not only improve their quality of life, but it can actually extend it. There are several aspects to
this care, and many of them can be managed by you at home.
Treatment is designed to not only keep the body working as well as possible, but to ease pain.
Good nutrition is essential for cats with cancer, however they may not have a good appetite. You can manage this by giving appetite stimulants, and tempting them with their favorite food. In many cases, cats will need either syringe feeding or placement of a stomach tube to make sure they get enough nutrition.
Cancer often causes pain, and pain relief is a very important part of looking after your sick cat. Fentanyl patches on the skin or giving liquid pain relief by mouth will make him feel much better.
Many cats with cancer will become dehydrated, so you have to give them fluids. Your vet may initially put them on an intravenous drip, but at home, you can give fluids to your cat using a needle under the skin. It’s not hard, and your vet can show you how to do it.
Most sick cats really appreciate a bit of tender loving care. A warm soft bed can be a source of comfort. They may also not groom themselves very well. A regular brushing will keep their coat in good shape, and lift their spirits.
Looking after cats with cancer can be very stressful for the owner. If you’re going to do the best you can for your cat, you must also take care of yourself. Allow yourself some time to relax, ask for help if you need it, and you’ll find you won’t feel so drained.
