Insurance is not the most fun item to shop for, and When you’re buying cat health insurance, you do want to find the best policy for you.

Cat health insurance policies are not unlike people’s health insurance – they have a monthly or yearly premium, and they also have an excess.

Here are 8 steps to help you choose the best cat health insurance for your furry family.

1. Ask your veterinarian. Most vets will have had dealings with insurance companies and will be able to let you know which ones are difficult to deal with, and which ones provide an effective policy.

2. Choose a company that has been around for a long time. That way you know they’re not going to disappear. The last thing you want to do is spend the money on cat health insurance and have the company fold!

3. Closely examine the coverage offered by the plans. Broad coverage is better, but it is also more costly. Some plans also cover routine wellness exams and vaccinations.

4. It’s ideal if the company knows what they’re talking about. This means they either have veterinary professionals on staff, or work closely with them. That way they know what they’re insuring against.

5. Make sure the policy allows you to choose your own veterinarian. There’d be nothing worse than being forced to use an unfamiliar veterinarian when your animal needs care. Make sure you can use your regular veterinarian who you know and trust.

6. If possible, avoid a waiting period. The whole point of buying cat health insurance is to have coverage from the day you sign on the bottom line. You can bet you’re paying for the policy from the day you sign for it, so why not be able to use it from that date?

7. Choose a company that provides all the information you ask for, including coverage, benefits, payment schedule. If you’re uncertain, make sure you find out the answer to your questions and if they’re not forthcoming, choose another company. Cat heath insurance is difficult enough to fathom without having the company make it harder.

8. Does the company have a reimbursement policy? If you pay for a year in advance and your cat passes away, will they reimburse the monies already paid?

This gives you a starting point when it comes to choosing cat health insurance for your beloved family member.
